Today, I pushed myself towards the theater to watch the Lilo and Stitch Remake. Hearing on the internet that some people found it no good, I put that aside and went as a die-hard fan of the old series. Let me tell you, the movie does an amazing job at being it’s own thing – while trying to stay true to Ohana and the original.
Yes, remakes don’t usually work out. Especially lately, when people are just tired of movies being bad and bland. You can only make so many mission impossible movies.
However, the Lilo and Stitch remake started strong. It definitely misses some key scenes from the original, including more of Elvis and Lilo trying to teach Stitch the meaning of good. That didn’t seem to matter – the movie does an amazing job keeping the spirit of Ohana alive. It hits most of the key points, all while giving Stitch as much screen-time as possible.
My only real regrets is not seeing more of Jumba and Pleekly’s original form. Giving them a human form was strange, but it seemed to actually work. There are other mild changes, which we can’t address without hitting spoilers.
Overall, it’s a great family movie – and great for fans of the series. If you’re going to be nit-picky about every single change, it won’t work for you. Embrace what it is – a magical experience that allows us to experience the universe once again.
